What is Email Spoofing?
Email spoofing is the process of sending an email message from a fake source, while making it appear to be originating from an authentic source
For example: An email appears to be originating from email@originaladdress.com (spoofed address), but actually the email is being sent from email@fakeaddress.com (actual source).
This does not mean that your email account is compromised. It simply means the sender of the email has successfully fooled the mail client into believing that the email was actually sent from a real address.
What are the threats?
Victims may:
- Lose their personal and financial information to an unknown source
- Unknowingly download malware on their system/network.
What are the risks?
Cyber criminals exploit the victims’ personal information for:
- Harassment
- Cyber stalking
- Holding the user to random for monetary benefit
Additionally, financial information is exploited causing financial loss to the victim. Malware successfully installed on the victim’s system allows remote access to the criminal for stealing vital information or misusing the system for other criminal activities.
